WALKING IN THE PICOS DE EUROPA
We have put together a walking tour of the Picos de Europa, visting all three massifs, The Western or Cornión, the Central or Urrieles and the Eastern or Andara.
This is a tour that avoids the overcrowding that often occurs in the more touristy areas, in the summer months. Relatively few people get to access and enjoy the Picos de Europa in the way this trip has been designed to.
The walks have been classed as medium difficulty, with distances of 10-15 Km daily and 400-600 metres climb. You don’t need to be an expert, just have basic hill walking experience and a sense of adventure.
DAY 1 – Arrive in Llanes, at your chosen accommodation.
DAY 2 – Breakfast. THE WESTERN MASSIF (THE ROUTE OF THE MAJADAS) A Majada is a high mountain meadow, where horses, sheep or other animals are put out to pasture during the mild summer months. The trip starts from Lake Enol in the heart of the Picos de Europa mountain range, and heads up to the top of La Reblagas and then on to the beautiful Toyeyo Majada. The route then continues towards the Las Bobias Majada and on to Vega de Ario, where you will stop to eat with spectacular views of the Cantabrian Sea and peaks of Las Peñas Santas. The route continues via the Belbin Majada, famous for manufacturing Gamoneu cheese and returns to Lake Enol. Back to Llanes with a stop at a local cider producer’s.
DAY 3 – Breakfast. THE CENTRAL MASSIF (SOTRES-PANDEBANO-BULNES-PONCEBOS) This is a classic trek through the Mazico Central (central massif). It begins in the village of Sotres with a climb up to the pass at Collado Pandébano with beautiful views of the iconic limestone face of the Naranjo de Bulnes. After lunch the route continues down the Tagus Canal to Poncebos, to meet the transport waiting to take you back to llanes.
DAY 4 – Breakfast. THE EASTERN MASSIF (PICO BORU) This trek starts in Jito del Escarandi and follows the path past the Ándara mines and on to the Casetón mountain refuge. It then continues on to Pozo de Ándara and the start of the climb up to Pico Boru (1.897 m) which has magnificent views of the entire Eastern and Central Massifs of the Picos de Europa.
